Newman Admissions
Newman School provides specialist education for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
We understand that choosing the right school can be an important decision for children, young people and their families. We welcome enquiries from parents and carers who would like to find out more about Newman, our provision and the support we provide.
All children and young people who attend Newman School require an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Education, Health and Care Plans
An EHCP describes a child or young person’s education, health and care needs and the provision required to support them.
If your child does not currently have an EHCP and you believe they may require additional specialist support, you should discuss this with their current school or education provider.
Further information about the EHCP process and support available to children and young people with SEND can be found through the Rotherham SEND Local Offer.
Visiting Newman School
If your child already has an EHCP and you are considering Newman School, parents and carers can arrange a visit to find out more about the school.
- A visit provides an opportunity to:
- see our learning environment and facilities;
- learn more about our curriculum and specialist provision;
- discuss your child’s individual needs;
- meet members of the Newman team; and
- ask any questions you may have about the school.
We recognise that every child and young person is different, and a visit can help families develop a better understanding of whether Newman’s provision may be appropriate for their child.

The Admissions Process
If, following a visit or discussion, you believe Newman School would be an appropriate placement for your child, the formal process takes place through your child’s Education, Health and Care Plan.
1. Request Newman School
Parents and carers should discuss the proposed change of placement through their child’s current educational setting and EHCP review process.
Newman School can be requested as the preferred destination.
2. Local Authority Consultation
The updated EHCP information is considered by the relevant EHCP team.
Where Newman is being considered as a placement, the Local Authority sends formal consultation paperwork to the school.
3. Newman Reviews the Consultation
Newman’s Senior Leadership Team reviews the consultation information carefully to consider the child or young person’s needs and whether the school can appropriately meet those needs.
The existing Newman admissions information states that the school responds to consultations within 15 working days.
4. Placement Decision
The formal placement process is managed through the Local Authority and the EHCP process.
Families will be kept informed as the consultation progresses and, where a placement at Newman is agreed, arrangements can then be made to support the young person’s transition into school.
Supporting a Positive Transition
We recognise that moving to a new school can be a significant change for a child or young person and their family.
Where a placement is agreed, we work with families, the previous educational setting and relevant professionals to understand the pupil’s individual needs and help make the transition into Newman as positive as possible.
This partnership with families begins during consultation and transition planning and continues through regular communication and personalised support once a pupil joins the school.
