Developing a voice, choice and connection

Communication

Communication is a fundamental life skill. At Newman, we recognise that developing effective communication from the earliest possible stage can transform a young person’s life chances, supporting learning, relationships, independence and participation in the wider community.

Early identification and intervention are central to our approach. Our experienced Communication Team supports pupils who face barriers to spoken language, providing personalised strategies and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), including signing, symbols and communication aids.

A qualified Speech and Language Therapist works alongside Newman’s AAC Lead and Communication Manager to ensure pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) receive appropriate assessment, advice and targeted intervention.

By working collaboratively with pupils, families, staff and other professionals, we aim to ensure every young person has an effective means of communication – enabling them to express themselves, make choices, build relationships and develop greater independence.

Communication

Finding a voice. Building connections.

We support every pupil to develop meaningful ways to communicate, express their choices and build positive relationships with the people and world around them.

Independence

Building skills for life.

We create opportunities for pupils to make choices, develop practical skills and become increasingly confident and independent in their learning and everyday lives.

Resilience

Growing confidence. Embracing challenges.

We support pupils to experience new opportunities, overcome challenges and develop the confidence and resilience they need for learning, adulthood and their future.
