Comfortable • Practical • Ready to Learn
School Uniform
From September 2026, Newman School is introducing a school uniform for the first time.
Our uniform has been designed specifically with Newman pupils in mind. Rather than taking a mainstream uniform and adapting it afterwards, we have considered comfort, sensory needs, medical needs and independence from the outset, ensuring that uniform supports our pupils rather than creating a barrier to their participation in school life.
We recognise that some pupils will require individual adjustments beyond the options described below. Parents and carers are encouraged to speak to their child’s class teacher or the school office so that we can work together to find an appropriate solution.
Our School Uniform
Navy • Light Blue • White • Grey
Our uniform uses simple colours and styles that are widely available from supermarkets and general clothing retailers.
There is no requirement for clothing to carry the Newman School logo. Families can choose either Newman-branded or non-branded items. Newman-branded clothing is entirely optional, helping to keep the uniform affordable and providing greater choice when finding clothing that meets their child’s individual needs.
Pupils should wear items from the uniform options below. Newman-branded clothing is entirely optional and is never required.
Polo Shirt, Shirt or Blouse
White or light blue polo shirt, shirt or blouse, with or without the Newman School logo.
For pupils with sensory needs, a plain white, grey or light blue round-neck T-shirt can be worn instead.
Sweatshirt or Cardigan
A plain navy or grey sweatshirt or cardigan, with or without the school logo.
Trousers or Joggers
Navy, grey or black trousers or jogging bottoms without sports branding or logos.
Soft, elasticated waistbands are welcome where these support a pupil’s comfort or independence.
Leggings for Medical Needs
Where a pupil needs to wear leggings for medical reasons, including to support continence or physical health needs, these should be a neutral navy, grey or black, without patterns.
Skirt or Pinafore Dress
Pupils and families who prefer this option can choose a navy skirt or navy checked pinafore dress.
Footwear
Pupils should wear comfortable trainers or school shoes.
Easy-fastening or Velcro styles are encouraged where these help a pupil to become more independent.
For safety and practicality, heeled shoes, boots and sandals should not be worn.
Individual & Sensory Needs
We understand that our pupils have a diverse range of needs and that a single approach will not be appropriate for everyone.
Adaptations can be made where a pupil’s sensory, physical, medical or other individual needs make elements of the standard uniform unsuitable.
If your child requires an adjustment, please contact their class teacher or the school office. Our priority is to find an appropriate solution that enables them to be comfortable, included and ready to learn.
No separate PE kit required
Pupils at Newman do not need a separate PE kit.
Our curriculum provides opportunities for physical activity throughout the school day, alongside outdoor learning and Forest School experiences.
As some of these activities can be messy, we ask families to provide a labelled change of clothing that can be kept at school. Wellies should also be provided where possible.
Uniform for Different Age Groups
The Newman School uniform applies to all pupils up to and including Year 11.
Post-16
Our Post-16 pupils are not expected to wear school uniform. Instead, they should attend in smart casual clothing.
This reflects the greater independence associated with Post-16 education and forms part of our Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) curriculum, helping young people prepare for further education, training and employment.
Jewellery & Watches
For safety reasons, pupils should wear plain stud earrings only and may wear a simple watch if they wish.
Smartwatches and other internet-connected wearable devices capable of taking photographs, accessing the internet or sending and receiving messages are not permitted. This supports our online safety and safeguarding arrangements and reflects examination access requirements for older pupils undertaking formal assessments.
Jewellery is worn at the pupil’s own risk and remains the responsibility of the pupil and their family. We strongly recommend that valuable or sentimental items are left at home, particularly as jewellery may need to be removed for physical activities, messy play or personal care.
Keeping Uniform Affordable
– Newman Uniform Rail
We want our uniform to remain as accessible and affordable as possible for families.
Newman operates a free uniform rail where parents and carers can donate uniform that their child has outgrown or no longer requires, provided it remains in good condition.
Families are equally welcome to take any items they need from the rail free of charge and without needing to ask.
Together with our decision not to require Newman-branded clothing, this helps families keep the cost of school uniform manageable.
Please Label Everything
Please clearly label all uniform, spare clothing, coats and other personal items with your child’s name.
This makes it much easier for staff to identify and return anything that becomes misplaced during the school day.
Communication
Finding a voice. Building connections.
We support every pupil to develop meaningful ways to communicate, express their choices and build positive relationships with the people and world around them.
Independence
Building skills for life.
We create opportunities for pupils to make choices, develop practical skills and become increasingly confident and independent in their learning and everyday lives.
Resilience
Growing confidence. Embracing challenges.
We support pupils to experience new opportunities, overcome challenges and develop the confidence and resilience they need for learning, adulthood and their future.
