Preparing pupils for life in modern Britain

British Values and SMSC

At Newman School, we actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

These values form an important part of pupils’ personal development and Preparation for Adulthood. Through our curriculum, wider school experiences and everyday relationships, we help pupils develop an understanding of themselves, other people and the communities in which they live.

Our approach is adapted to the individual needs and understanding of our pupils, providing meaningful opportunities to experience these values in practice.

Democracy

Having a voice and making choices

We encourage pupils to express their views and understand that their opinions matter.

Pupil voice is promoted throughout school life, with opportunities for pupils to make choices, contribute ideas and participate in decision-making. This includes opportunities such as voting and involvement through student representatives and councillors.

Through these experiences, pupils develop an understanding that people can have different opinions and that decisions can be made collectively.

The rule of law

Understanding rules, rights and responsibilities

Pupils are supported to understand why rules and boundaries are important and how they help to keep individuals and communities safe.

Clear expectations and consistent approaches help pupils understand the consequences of their choices and behaviour in ways appropriate to their individual needs and levels of understanding.

As pupils develop, we help them recognise their own rights and responsibilities and understand that rules and laws exist within school and the wider community.

Individual liberty

Making informed choices

At Newman, pupils are encouraged to develop independence and make choices within a safe and supportive environment.

We provide opportunities for pupils to express their preferences, explore their interests and increasingly take responsibility for decisions affecting their lives.

Through our curriculum and Preparation for Adulthood, pupils develop the communication, confidence and skills needed to make informed choices and participate as independently as possible in their communities.

Mutual respect

Valuing ourselves and others

Respect is central to relationships at Newman School.

We encourage pupils to recognise their own value and the value of others, developing positive relationships with pupils, staff and members of the wider community.

Through learning and everyday experiences, pupils are supported to understand that people may have different needs, experiences, opinions and perspectives and that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect.

Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

Understanding and celebrating difference

Newman is an inclusive school community and we want pupils to develop an understanding and appreciation of the diverse society in which they live.

Pupils have opportunities to learn about different religions, cultures, traditions and ways of life through the curriculum and wider school experiences.

We recognise and celebrate different cultural and religious festivals and provide opportunities for pupils to develop curiosity, understanding and respect for people whose beliefs or experiences may differ from their own..

British Values Across Newman

British Values are not taught in isolation. They are reflected throughout our curriculum and wider school life, including:

PSHE • Religious Education • Careers • Preparation for Adulthood • Pupil Voice • Relationships • Personal Development

They also complement Newman’s established curriculum drivers of:

Communication • Independence • Resilience

By helping pupils develop their voice, understand choices, respect others and participate in their communities, we aim to prepare every young person for a fulfilling adult life.

Communication

Finding a voice. Building connections.

We support every pupil to develop meaningful ways to communicate, express their choices and build positive relationships with the people and world around them.

Independence

Building skills for life.

We create opportunities for pupils to make choices, develop practical skills and become increasingly confident and independent in their learning and everyday lives.

Resilience

Growing confidence. Embracing challenges.

We support pupils to experience new opportunities, overcome challenges and develop the confidence and resilience they need for learning, adulthood and their future.
