Equality & Diversity
At Newman School, we are committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive and respectful community where every child and young person is valued as an individual.
We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to participate, learn, achieve and thrive. We recognise and celebrate difference and work to ensure that pupils, families, staff and visitors are treated with dignity, fairness and respect.
Our commitment to equality and diversity is closely connected to our school values of Communication, Independence, Resilience and Safeguarding and can be seen throughout school life.
Our Commitment
We are committed to providing equality of opportunity for everyone within our school community and to eliminating discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
We aim to ensure that no one is disadvantaged because of their:
- age;
- disability;
- gender reassignment;
- marriage or civil partnership;
- pregnancy or maternity;
- race, including colour, nationality and ethnic or national origin;
- religion or belief;
- sex; or
- sexual orientation.
We believe every young person deserves the chance to discover their strengths and ambitions. Through carefully planned experiences, enrichment activities and personalised support, pupils develop confidence, resilience and the skills needed to thrive in education, employment and life.
We recognise our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty and work to ensure that equality is considered in our policies, decisions, curriculum and everyday practice.

An Inclusive School Community
Inclusion is central to Newman’s ethos.
Our pupils have a wide range of individual strengths, needs and ways of experiencing and communicating with the world. We work to understand these differences and provide appropriate support, reasonable adjustments and personalised approaches so that pupils can participate as fully as possible in school life.
We recognise that equality does not always mean treating everyone in exactly the same way. It means understanding individual circumstances and removing barriers that could prevent someone from accessing opportunities, participating or achieving their potential.
Celebrating Diversity
We want pupils to understand and appreciate the diverse world in which they live.
Through our curriculum, relationships and wider school experiences, pupils are supported to develop an understanding of different people, families, communities, cultures, beliefs and ways of life.
We encourage kindness, curiosity and respect for others and challenge discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes whenever they arise.
This contributes to our aim of preparing pupils for adulthood and helping them participate confidently and positively within their communities.
Equality Across Our Curriculum
Equality, diversity and inclusion are reflected throughout our curriculum and wider school life.
We provide opportunities for pupils to develop their understanding of relationships, identity, communities, cultures and beliefs in ways that are meaningful and appropriate to their individual needs and stages of development.
Our curriculum supports pupils to develop respect for themselves and others, understand their rights and responsibilities and recognise the importance of treating people fairly.
We also promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
Accessibility and Reasonable Adjustments
We are committed to identifying and removing barriers to participation.
Reasonable adjustments are made where appropriate to support individual pupils, and our teaching, communication approaches, resources and learning environments are adapted to help pupils access education successfully.
We work closely with pupils, parents and carers, specialist professionals and other agencies to understand individual needs and provide appropriate support.
Equality Objectives
As part of our responsibilities under the Public Sector Equality Duty, Newman School publishes equality objectives that demonstrate how we are working to advance equality within our school community.
Progress towards these objectives is reviewed regularly and informs our continuing work to develop an inclusive school where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
Our Equality Information
Further information about our approach to equality, diversity and inclusion can be found in our policies and supporting documents.

Finding a voice. Building connections.
We support every pupil to develop meaningful ways to communicate, express their choices and build positive relationships with the people and world around them.
Independence
Building skills for life.
We create opportunities for pupils to make choices, develop practical skills and become increasingly confident and independent in their learning and everyday lives.
Resilience
Growing confidence. Embracing challenges.
We support pupils to experience new opportunities, overcome challenges and develop the confidence and resilience they need for learning, adulthood and their future.
