Our Vision
At Newman School, we believe every child and young person is entitled to the best possible education, care and learning environment. We have high expectations for every pupil and are committed to creating a school community where children and young people feel safe, understood, included and valued.
Every pupil is unique. Our approach is personalised around individual strengths, needs and aspirations, enabling pupils to make meaningful progress towards their academic, life skills and Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) outcomes.
Through strong relationships between pupils, families, staff and other professionals, we provide meaningful opportunities for learning, personal development and preparation for adulthood.
Our Ethos
Our ethos is built around inclusion, respect and the belief that every pupil has the capacity to learn, develop and make a positive contribution.
We provide a friendly, caring and welcoming environment where pupils and families are listened to and where positive relationships underpin learning.
Our pupils are encouraged to communicate, make choices, solve problems, take appropriate risks and develop increasing independence. We provide a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum alongside enrichment and extracurricular opportunities that enable pupils to experience success in different ways.
Learning at Newman extends beyond the classroom. Academic development, communication, reading, wellbeing, relationships, life skills and Preparation for Adulthood are woven throughout school life.
We celebrate progress in all its forms and recognise that success looks different for every young person.
Four principles underpin life and learning at Newman School.
Our Core Values
Communication
Every pupil has a voice.
Communication is fundamental to learning, relationships and independence, and is valued throughout our school.
Opportunities to communicate are embedded throughout the school day. Our staff model positive language and communication and follow a consistent ‘one voice’ approach, helping to create a positive and autism-friendly learning environment.
We recognise that pupils communicate in different ways. Appropriate communication methods and resources, including PECS books and communication devices where required, are made accessible to pupils so that they can express their needs, ideas, choices and feelings.
Pupils are given appropriate processing time and staff use a range of questioning and interaction techniques to support understanding and participation.
Communication is also supported through lessons and our whole-school reading culture, enabling pupils at all levels to develop their literacy and communication skills.
Independence
Building skills for life.
Developing independence is central to our curriculum and our approach to learning.
We provide a well-planned, carefully sequenced and ambitious curriculum that enables pupils to make clear progress towards their academic, life skills and EHCP outcomes.
Preparation for Adulthood provides a ‘golden thread’ throughout the curriculum, creating opportunities for pupils to practise skills, make choices, solve problems and take increasing responsibility for themselves.
Clear expectations, high-quality learning resources and purposeful learning environments help pupils understand what is expected of them and become increasingly confident learners.
Teaching is differentiated and reasonable adjustments are made, including through support from external professionals where appropriate, to enable pupils to access learning successfully.
Pupils receive meaningful feedback and their progress is carefully assessed. Where appropriate, they also have opportunities to work towards recognised qualifications and awards.
Our aim is to equip every young person with the greatest possible independence for their future.
Resilience
Confidence to try, learn and grow.
We want our pupils to approach new experiences with confidence and develop the resilience to overcome challenges.
Through a multisensory, engaging and appropriately challenging curriculum, pupils are encouraged to explore, take positive risks, solve problems and learn from their experiences within a supportive environment.
We recognise the importance of physical and emotional wellbeing. Appropriately trained staff support pupils with medical and physical needs, while our wider curriculum develops self-awareness, self-care, positive relationships and strategies for managing mental health and wellbeing.
Enrichment and extracurricular activities provide further opportunities for pupils to discover interests, experience new challenges and develop confidence beyond the classroom.
We also work with appropriate external professionals and agencies to provide a holistic approach to supporting individual pupils.
Safeguarding
A safe place to learn and thrive.
The safety and wellbeing of every pupil is fundamental to everything we do.
We provide a friendly, welcoming and inclusive environment in which pupils, families, staff and visitors are treated with respect and feel listened to.
Our qualified and skilled staff receive appropriate training, understand their safeguarding responsibilities and work together to identify and respond promptly to concerns about a pupil’s welfare.
We maintain a safe learning environment, monitor attendance and ensure individual support plans capture important information about each pupil’s needs, preferred approaches to learning and behaviour support. These plans are regularly reviewed so that pupils receive consistent and appropriate support.
All staff are expected to uphold the professional standards and behaviours that contribute to a safe, respectful and positive school culture.
We believe every young person deserves the chance to discover their strengths and ambitions. Through carefully planned experiences, enrichment activities and personalised support, pupils develop confidence, resilience and the skills needed to thrive in education, employment and life.

Communication • Independence • Resilience
Preparing for the Future
Ultimately, everything we do at Newman is about helping our pupils prepare for their next step and for adult life.
By developing communication, independence and resilience within a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment, we aim to give every learner the knowledge, skills, experiences and confidence they need to participate as fully as possible in their community and lead a fulfilling life.
