Helping pupils grow in confidence, resilience and independence

Personal Development

At Newman School, personal development is an integral part of every pupil’s education. We want our children and young people to develop the confidence, communication skills, independence and resilience they need to participate in their communities and lead fulfilling adult lives.

Personal development extends beyond individual lessons. It is embedded throughout our curriculum, daily routines, relationships and wider opportunities, with Preparation for Adulthood providing a golden thread throughout each pupil’s journey at Newman.

Through PSHE, physical education, careers education, enrichment, pupil voice and opportunities within the wider community, pupils are supported to develop their understanding of themselves, their relationships with others and the world around them.

Our approach is personalised to reflect each pupil’s individual needs, abilities and aspirations. We recognise that personal development will look different for every young person and provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to make choices, communicate their views, build relationships, develop healthy lifestyles, experience new challenges and become increasingly independent.

Communication

Finding a voice. Building connections.

We support every pupil to develop meaningful ways to communicate, express their choices and build positive relationships with the people and world around them.

Independence

Building skills for life.

We create opportunities for pupils to make choices, develop practical skills and become increasingly confident and independent in their learning and everyday lives.

Resilience

Growing confidence. Embracing challenges.

We support pupils to experience new opportunities, overcome challenges and develop the confidence and resilience they need for learning, adulthood and their future.
